Reproductive and Child Health (RCH)
RCH has been a core and focus area of work to ensure reproductive health and rights. Providing trainings and technical support to MNGOs in the NE region as RRC under MoH&FW, GOI and NRHM is one of the key programmes areas. Other key components are advocacy with government and other agencies, Behaviour Change Communication (BCC), awareness generation etc, Capacity building of grassroot level organizations in the area of RCH.
Indian Systems of Medicine (ISM) and Promotion of AYUSH
VHAA is one of the premier organizations contributing towards conservation of rich heritage of herbal and therapeutic medicine. It has brought a significant development in the traditional treatment scenario of Assam by showcasing and popularizing the huge potentials of ISM through capacity building, organizing health camps and mass sensitization programmes. VHAA also works for the promotion of Ayurveda, Unani, Siddhi and Homeopathy(AYUSH) in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW).
HIV/AIDS
VHAA pioneered the capacity and skill building of civil societies/NGOs to work in the area of the prevention and control of HIV/AIDS in Assam. It also works in close association with the State AIDS Control Society and other multilateral agencies on Targeted Interventions, BCC, Capacity building trainings, consultancy, advocacy etc in the area of HIV/AIDS.
TB and Malaria Control
Tuberculosis and Malaria have been major focus areas in VHAA’s work. Regular activities on TB prevention and control including DOTS and Advocacy Communication and Social Mobilization (ACSM), capacity building etc of health workers is being carried out by the organisation. Towards prevention and control of Malaria, VHAA is carrying out several interventions which include treatment of bed nets at the community level, distribution of medicated mosquito nets, conducting regular outreach health camps, taking of slides and testing for Malaria, BCC on use of bed nets, IRS, reporting of fever cases etc, capacity building of Health and Out Reach Workers on early detection and prompt treatment of malaria cases, and sensitization programmes in different parts of the state.
Tobacco Control
VHAA has taken up initiatives to reduce tobacco consumption as part of its public health promotion strategy. Along with developing IEC materials, sensitization and awareness generation programmes, it has also been instrumental in advocating for the proper implementation of the important provisions of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Product Act (COTPA), 2003 in partnership with VHAI and is working in close coordination with district administration at the district level towards making the districts smoke free and all education institutions tobacco-free institutions.
Disaster Management
VHAA extends emergency support services like organizing health camps, relief services during flood and conflict situation in collaboration with its member organizations. Training programmes on disaster preparedness is a part of VHAA’s work agenda. VHAA members have served as part of the relief team of VHAI during the Tsunami Relief Programme at Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

VHAA has been publishing health related journals, Books, Audio-Visuals etc. These publications have received huge popularity as helpful tools for many organizations who are working in the area of health. They are helping indivisuals to maintain a healthy life style. Assamese translated versions of Where There is no Doctor, Better Health Care series are among some of the popular publications of VHAA. These materials can be procured by any organizations and indivisuals at a nominal prize.
